What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Through Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) we work to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern and build strategies to improve quality of life.
Whether you’re building independence, developing communication tools, or connecting with your LGBTIQA+ community with confidence, PBS puts your goals front and centre. If you've ever wondered what positive behaviour support is, or whether it's right for you, we’ve got the answers.
Positive Behaviour Support Plans:
At Thorne Harbour, our positive behaviour support plans are tailored to the individual, with practitioners who understand what it means to be LGBTIQA+. Our support fits who you are and how you live.
We offer:
- Support letters to advocate for the right level of funding in future NDIS plans
- Interim positive behaviour support plans within 4 weeks of engagement
- Comprehensive positive behaviour support plans developed after 6 months for long-term wellbeing
- Ongoing review of restrictive practices, with fade-out strategies built in
- Skill-building support for budgeting, independent living, and daily routines
Strategies That Support You:
Our positive behaviour support strategies are shaped by the LGBTIQA+ people we support. We can help with:
- Establishing daily routines to support structure and reduce stress
- Communication support, including visuals
- Emotional regulation, including identifying emotions and responding in healthy ways
- Community engagement, with tips, practice and confidence-building
- Safety planning to ensure behaviour support never comes at the cost of your rights
We work closely with your whole support network, from family to allied health professionals, to make sure everyone understands your positive behaviour support plan.
Why Positive Behaviour Support is Different for LGBTIQA+ People:
Our positive behaviour support service recognises that for many LGBTIQA+ people, experiences of stigma, discrimination, or exclusion have shaped the way they interact with the world—and that must be understood as part of behaviour support.
At Thorne Harbour Health, we bring an affirming, trauma-informed approach that:
- Validates sexuality, gender identity, and lived experience
- Challenges systemic barriers and discrimination in mainstream services
- Supports community connection as a key part of emotional wellbeing
