Women's Health Week 2024: Get Involved
13 Aug 2024
Women’s Health Week, led by Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, is an annual event dedicated to empowering women across Australia to prioritise their health and wellbeing. Thorne Harbour is proud to support the week, having partnered with Jean Hailes on a range of studies, services and podcasts in recent years.
In 2024, the week runs from September 2 to September 6, and it’s an excellent opportunity for all women, including LGBTIQ+ women, to take charge of their health. At Thorne Harbour Health, we recognize the unique health challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ women and are here to support and celebrate the diversity of women’s health needs. We address these specific health needs through our range of services as well as our LGBTIQ+ Women’s Health Conference and Women’s Health Strategy.
Here are four ways you can get involved in Women’s Health Week 2024:
Attend a Local Event
Jean Hailes organizes a range of events during Women’s Health Week, including seminars, workshops, and community gatherings. These events provide valuable information and support for women on various health topics such as mental health, physical activity, and sexual health. Check out the Women’s Health Week website for a list of events happening near you. Many of these events are inclusive and cater to the needs of LGBTIQ+ women, offering a safe space to connect and share experiences.
Get a Health Check
Regular health checks are vital for early detection and prevention of health issues. Women’s Health Week is the perfect time to schedule that overdue check-up or screening. When compared to the general population, LGBTIQ+ women have higher rates of health issues, including smoking and vaping addiction, STIs and mental ill health. For our communities, accessing inclusive healthcare providers who understand your specific needs is crucial.
Thorne Harbour’s Centre Clinic in Victoria offers LGBTIQ+ friendly services, including cervical screening, fertility support and smoking cessation support. We encourage you to reach out and make an appointment.
Support Women’s Health Initiatives
Women’s Health Week is also an opportunity to give back. Whether it’s donating to organisations like Jean Hailes or volunteering your time as a peer supporter in groups like Thorne Harbour’s Sphere and Scope, supporting women’s health initiatives can make a real difference in the lives of women across Australia. Consider joining Thorne Harbour or another local advocacy group that focuses on LGBTIQ+ women’s health.
Start a Conversation
One of the most powerful ways to get involved in Women’s Health Week is by starting a conversation. Talk to your friends, family, and colleagues about the importance of women’s health, and share information about the events and resources available. Health literacy is one of the key goals outlined in our Women’s Health Strategy, and campaigns like the Public Cervix Announcement help to increase public understanding of queer women’s health issues.
By opening up these conversations, you can help create a more inclusive environment where LGBTIQ+ women feel empowered to take control of their health.
Women’s Health Week 2024 is an opportunity to celebrate and prioritize women’s health in all its diversity. At Thorne Harbour Health, we’re committed to addressing the health inequalities of LGBTIQ+ women and providing services for our communities to live healthy, fulfilling lives. Join us in making this year’s Women’s Health Week a time of action.
