Is Mpox (Monkeypox) in Bali?
02 Aug 2024
Mpox (monkeypox) is on the rise in Australia. With positive mpox cases hitting record highs across the globe, you may be wondering whether the recent outbreak will force you to change everything from your overseas travel itinerary to your Friday night plans.
We’ve got good news: taking control of your health doesn’t have to mean cancelling your Airbnb reservation in Ubud or your night out in Brunswick. If you’re vaccinated, then you’re good to go.
Is Mpox (Monkeypox) in Bali, Indonesia?
In November 2023, a spike in mpox cases in Indonesia led Bali officials to require mandatory screenings for the virus at the airport. However, as of 01 August 2024, there have been no reports from officials about the outbreak worsening, which should ease your mind about your holiday plans.
That being said, it’s important to remember that even if you’re unlikely to catch mpox in Bali, you can help keep Bali’s numbers down. Be a good guest, and remember that protecting yourself from mpox is the best way to protect others.
The mpox vaccine is the most effective way to avoid serious disease from mpox at home and abroad. Time your vaccination doses to ensure you’re fully protected for your outbound flight, and you’ll be enjoying the tropical sunshine with not a worry in sight.
Is Mpox Still in Australia?
According to the Australian Department of Health, there are currently 183 cases of mpox in Australia — more than in the 2022 and 2023 outbreaks combined.
So far, most cases of monkeypox in Victoria have been linked to local transmissions. In fact, about 90 per cent of reported cases in our state appear to have been locally acquired.
But that doesn’t mean you need to flake on your next Grindr hookup.
After you get vaccinated, learn about mpox symptoms, exchange contact info with your sexual partners, and update each other about any reason to get tested. Staying aware and in touch will help stop the spread of mpox in Australia.
It is important to know that the vaccination might not offer you complete protection against getting the virus, but once you are vaccinated, it means that you will experience less severe symptoms if you do.
Where Else is Mpox?
In 2024, there have been mpox outbreaks in the United States, Brazil, Spain, France, Colombia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, Peru, and China. Recently, positive cases have also increased in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
While that may seem alarming, there’s no need to worry. Just stay updated on the recommendations of local public health authorities wherever you go, and do your best to keep yourself and your community safe.
Though monkeypox numbers are climbing worldwide, we have more tools and knowledge than ever to stay protected from the virus. Get vaccinated, be aware, and enjoy yourself.

10 Years of PrEP in Australia
In 2014, Australia welcomed pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) into the toolkit for HIV prevention. As news has emerged of PrEP supply shortages in Australia, it’s worth taking stock of some of the lessons we’ve learned from the past decade.
