Molecular epidemiology, the ability to track pathogens by genetic sequencing, has been routinely employed in a number of diseases including COVID-19. But to date this tool is not routinely used to track HIV.
Epidemiologists and researchers have argued that this tool would enhance surveillance of circulating strains, transmission sources, and the success of prevention interventions such as community awareness, PrEP and undetectable viral load.
However, there are concerns from some within the community about the deployment of molecular epidemiology that include privacy, stigma, confidentiality and criminalisation. This forum will examine the uses, benefits and safeguards related to the use of molecular epidemiology.
